Composing for the orchestra in a concerto is different to writing a symphony. Orchestra composition for operas can take on psychological dimensions that propel the plot-lines.
Also a deep and an innate understanding of instruments and their keys, and how they blend and collide.
Getting maximum clarity out of an orchestra and ‘color’, without wasting anything or having indiscernible unnecessary parts, or clashing components.
The ability to understand notes and identify them easily and quickly.
The unique ability to communicate with the composer and reflect his mind in the orchestration
